The subtle cost of either\/or thinking

I was talking with my mum on the weekend when I heard myself say;

"I can't grow my business and fall in love at the same time, Mum."

As soon as the words left my mouth, I felt it. An internal alarm.

I can have expansion. Or I can have intimacy. But not both.

An either/or scenario.

The belief that expansion in one area must come at the expense of another is a survival pattern.

"If I get this done, then I can have love."

Work first.

Prove yourself.

Get stable.

Then soften.

If there is one thing I've learnt:

There is always more work.

Another level.

Another goal.

Another place to be.

This is how sneakily survival patterns run our lives.

This is the kind of pattern I often see in the women I work with.

Women who decide they want and then build internal rules around what it's going to cost them to pursue that.

We double down on what we know we're good at.

We polish what already works.

We avoid the thing that might actually crack us open.

We focus on the things we know how to succeed at.

And choose what feels safe and controllable.

So when I heard myself say the words out loud, I got curious.

Do I really want both?

Am I ready to build and be held at the same time?

In my work, we explore the either/or scenarios through Quadrant Clears so the decision is made from wholeness, not an old survival pattern.

The four quadrants:

Having possibility A but not possibility B

Possibility B, but not possibility A

Neither possibility A nor B.

Both possibilities A and B together.

When you clear limitations, you open your field of possibility.

I don't know yet what this season will hold.

What I know is:

I'm no longer available for "once I've done enough."

I'm a full body yes to building and being held at the same time.

If you've noticed an either/or story quietly shaping your decisions like:

  • live your life purpose or have money.

  • Be successful or be present with your family.

  • Be responsible or pursue what lights you up

  • Speak up or be loved.

...pause and then ask yourself....What do I believe it is going to cost me if I am going to pursue that?
